Is Spotting During Pregnancy Normal?

Hello, my name is Josie and I’m 8 weeks pregnant. Today after intercourse I noticed a little bleeding but nothing major and no pain came with it. This is also the first time I’ve spotted during the pregnancy. Is this normal? Should I get checked? Thanks.

It is great that you did not have any pain or cramping. Most of the time slight bleeding or spotting is nothing serious but you should always let your provider know if you have any type of bleeding during pregnancy. The bleeding may just be from the cervix which has an increased blood supply during pregnancy and can sometimes bleed easily after intercourse. Bleeding early in pregnancy can also be caused by an infection, ectopic pregnancy or possible threatened miscarriage. When you contact your provider, they will probably want to check your cervix and possibly do an ultrasound.
